i love triangle and i have watched every season except for season 1 on youtube which is where i also watched the spin-off show davenport diaries. in fact, while being so totally ENGROSSED in season five, i was prompted to become a subscriber because there were no more new episodes after episode 30 and i just had to know what was happening with my favorite couple: august and kevin. i am so in love with terrill ross *fever* and kyree moore that my adoration borders on OBSESSION *ah the smell of it.* and my admiration of the COMBUSTIBLE chemistry between donta hensley and king david led me to follow them in the tyson plus series, honest men.
i am so proud of the creative forces behind triangle. as a black gay man i have lamented for years the fact that mainstream representation and presentation of black gay men in fictional media is PRACTICALLY NON-EXISTENT. yes, there was the one-off patrick ian polk production of punks which ultimately became noah's arc in the mid-2000s, but overall the MAINSTREAM media IGNORES stories of black gay men in fiction. i have never seen any production that goes for the GUSTO with such CREATIVE PROWESS and INFECTIOUS GLEE as does triangle.
noah's arc was great in its day and patrick ian polk is a trailblazer, but noah's arc never pushed the envelope as does triangle. in addition, triangle distinguishes itself by showcasing a CALVALCADE of beautiful black men. characters like clint/kevin, ashton, winston, ian, chadwick, bart, and august are a breath of fresh air and are sorely missing from the mainstream of black or black gay representation. truth be told, i never thought i would see anymore black gay love in the mainstream after logo cancelled noah's arc once the second season concluded in 2007.
and it's no secret that although queer as folks ran for six popular seasons on showtime and was deeply beloved, the powers that be of that production were DEMONSTRATIVELY UNINTERESTED in black gay characters. i cannot stress more EMPHATICALLY how much triangle fulfills a VOID that has been greatly undervalued--the genre of black gay romantic fiction--that the mainstream CONSISTENTLY and STRATEGICALLY overlooks to their own detriment.
after noah's arc, i discovered the dl chronicles, but once again, the lifespan of that creation did not live beyond four episodes. you guys should pat yourself on the back. you are in a class all by yourself. no other production which routinely features black gay characters can boast your LONGEVITY. people love to bandy about the names of oprah winfrey and tyler perry, but both of these individuals have shown over the past decade or so that they are primarily interested in presenting stories of HETERONORMATIVE black couples and certainly they are not inclined to show the decadent deliciousness of the black gay romantic triangle. Many viewers suggest that you partner with oprah or tyler, but i am probably in the minority when i caution that would be a huge mistake. oprah and tyler are very stingy and economial with their presentations of black gay men. i tried to watch the haves and have nots and could not get past the second season. one or two UNDERDEVELOPED, TOKEN black gay characters is a slap in the face.
i could rhapsodize about triangle for several pages, but i would only be repeating myself. i will just conclude by saying that if the creative talent that devised triangle did not exist that characters like winston, ashton, bart, clint/kevin, august, ian, CHADWICK, and julian would not exist in any other form across mainstream media. yes, there is an abundance of shows which feature black characters, but THREE DIMENSIONAL BLACK GAY CHARACTERS are still a RARITY on netflix, amazon, showtime, or hbo. i repeat for the umpteenth time that there is NO OTHER SHOW LIKE TRIANGLE on mainstream media. you all have SPOILED ME. i wish there was a triangle L.A., triangle CHICAGO, triangle NEW YORK, triangle ATLANTA, triangle NEW ORLEANS, and a triangle SAN FRANCISCO.
